The IBPS Senior Girl Scouts was established
in 1998, we started with sixteen girl scouts
and three adult leaders. Our troop has been
drawing tremendous attention from our community
ever since and it is becoming one of
the biggest Girl Scout troop there are. Leaders
witnessed many girls transitioning into successful
young adults. Celebrating the 20 th
year anniversary of our Senior Girl Scout troop
will recognize all the accomplishments made
by the scouts, adult leaders and parents over
the years.
We can start off with the first remarkable
achievement made by Melissa Lin, recipient
of The Future Woman of Distinction Award
in year 2008, this award is given to one Ambassador
Girl Scout in New York City. Furthermore,
since the launch of IBPS Girl Scouts, we
have had 19 gold award recipients. This award
is the highest honor a Senior or Ambassador
Girl Scout can achieve, the project gives the
scouts an opportunity to learn more about a
topic they care about globally or even in their
community.
Our troop has scouts ranging from age 12 to
18. To insure communication between girls of
all ages, we break the girls into 5 patrols with
1 adult leader. We meet on Friday night for
indoor meetings and we usually have outdoor
meetings on Sundays. We meet monthly with
all of the adult leaders, committee chairperson,
senior patrol leaders and patrol leaders
to discuss about the programs and pick the
activities. The adult leaders provide support
and guidance. The activities consist of temple
events, indoor meetings, outdoor activities
and community services other than temple.
We also follow Girl Scout Council badge programs
designed according to the rank: Cadette,
Senior and Ambassador.
Other than the Girl Scout Law and Promise,
“The Three Acts of Goodness” (say
good words, do good deeds and think good
thoughts) are principles that the IBPS Senior
Girl Scout troop follows. The importance of
these words impacts every meeting we have,
regardless of it taking place within the temple
or outside. Buddhism teaches that the
source of unwholesome karma comes from
our body, speech and mind. Therefore, in our
cultivation, we should start from these three
areas. We encourage our girls to continue to
practice “The Three Acts of Goodness” in the
future and hopefully it will affect our future
immensely.
